The Devil-Ettes (San Francisco)

They wear pink miniskirts, white vinyl go go boots & petite hand made devil horns. Sassy, sultry, yet utterly All-American, The Devil-Ettes provide good, clean fun for all ages! These go-go goddesses have gained notoriety for “settin’ the fringe a flyin’” at their wacky, wickedly wild high-energy shows. Keeping the lost art of retro dances alive since 1998, these gals are living masters of the most vivacious dances from the vortex of the heyday of 1950’s – 1970’s including the Hully Gully, the Twist, the Frug, the Watusi and oh, so many more great dance steps! In addition to numerous performances in their hometown of San Francisco, the girls’ fancy footwork has taken them to Las Vegas, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Austin, NYC, Seattle, San Diego and beyond! Honest-to-goodness GO GO DANCERS! Right there before your very eyes. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to Go Go Heaven.

El Vez (Seattle)

El Vez is a Mexican-American singer-songwriter and musician, who performs and records original material and covers classic rock songs. Mixing the styles of Elvis Presley and many other American rock artists with his own Latin-American heritage and music, he is known for expressing revolutionary views through the satire and humor in his songs.

~~~~~~~~~
DJ Vodka Twist (Seattle)
A resident at STUDIO 66 – a Seattle club night celebrating all things 60’s. Dj Vodka Twist is also a resident DJ at the world famous Roq La Rue gallery. When DJ Vodka Twist is at the decks you can expect to shimmy, do the monkey and…. TWIST!
~~~~~~~~~
Agent Double-O S.O.U.L. (Seattle)
When not undercover in the capacity of an espionage operative actively vanquishing diabolical supervillains, somehow finds time to indulge his taste in spinning exotic contraband disques for dancers in seedy bars the world over. Then it’s back to the never-ending, perilous life of spy versus spy for our intrepid agent. Odds are he won’t live to see tomorrow.

Closing Up Shop? The Uncertain Future of Seattle’s Art Galleries

Why is it so hard to keep an art gallery open in Seattle?  Find out at this panel discussion Jan. 24th at Town Hall

Panelists:

An Evening with Patti Smith

patti-smith

Patti Smith will be reading from her book “M Train” on Monday, October 3rd at University Temple United Methodist Church in The Sanctuary. Tickets available on Brown Paper.

Written by the iconic poet, artist, and National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids, Patti Smith’s M Train is a memoir unlike any other. Told through her travels to cafes, cemeteries, hotels, and train stations around the world, Smith’s drifting, meditative essays recount moments of her creative and personal life from her time spent with her late husband Fred Sonic Smith to a strange encounter with chess master Bobby Fischer and visits to the graves of Yukio Mishima and Sylvia Plath. But more than just descriptions of people, places, and encounters, her poetic reflections take on a life of their own punctuated by Smith’s iconic Polaroid photos and woven through with ruminations that move in and out of dreams and reality, past and present, interior and exterior, and the vast landscape of creative aspiration and inspiration that has informed her life.

As M Train comes out in paperback, join us for what is sure to be a memorable evening with Smith. Following a reading and discussion of her book, Smith will end the night by performing several songs with musician and frequent collaborator Lenny Kaye.

Act Theater presents Interactive Art 7/21

Seattle Rep.Real Time Interactive

REAL TIME is the inaugural exhibit for ACT’s new series called ART at ACT, for which they will invite area artists to show work in a variety of art forms.

This first event features four Seattle artists, Scott Bennett, Marne Cohen-Vance, Laurie Le Clair and Jeff Scott, showing interactive Installation Art works. The works will be avialable for viewing by appointment after the opening reception, through February 19th. Please come to our reception – and bring friends! Admission is free and there will be vino and snacks.

There are so few places where artists can exhibit giant-sized installation projects. With the loss of Suyama Space, there are even fewer. Act Theater and the featured artists are hoping to jump-start ACT as a venue by hosting this big opening event on the 21st. The hope is it will be successful enough to convince ACT to keep doing it, providing a great exhibit space for artists who like to work big. Please show up and support their effort by being present!

Hello Kitty coming to Seattle!

Hello Kitty meets Star Wars at EMP
Hello Kitty meets Star Wars at EMP

Hello! Super Cute Fun-Filled Hello Kitty show coming from Los Angeles to Experience Music Project in Seattle.

The first large-scale Hello Kitty museum retrospective in the United States will be on display at EMP Museum and is scheduled to open on November 14, 2015. Created in celebration of the pop icon’s 40th Anniversary, Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty is organized by Sanrio, the global lifestyle brand best known for Hello Kitty, and the Japanese American National Museum , where the exhibition originated. The show examines the history of Hello Kitty and her influence on popular culture, combining a product-based historical and sociological examination of Hello Kitty with more than 600 rare and unique pieces from Sanrio’s archives, and an installation of over 40 mixed media works by artists from around the world demonstrating Hello Kitty’s influence on contemporary art. Hello! invites the public to learn more about and gain new appreciation for the evolution of Hello Kitty, the role she has played bridging Japanese and American cultures in the U.S., and fans’ emotional connection to her. Hello! will be on view at EMP through May 15, 2016. Plans are underway for the exhibition to travel to additional museums across the U.S.

Hello KItty Abe Lincoln

“Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty offers an in-depth look at the evolution of Hello Kitty and her impact on pop culture around the world,” said Jill Koch, Sr. Vice President of Brand Management and Marketing of Sanrio, Inc. “After a successful run at the Japanese American National Museum, we are excited to bring the exhibition to EMP and share the experience with more fans. EMP, whose mission of reaching multigenerational audiences through powerful exhibits and programming focused on contemporary culture, is the perfect home for our retrospective.”

Hello! originated at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, where it drew record-breaking attendance from visitors of all ages from around the world. The exhibition was co-curated by Dr. Christine Yano, author of Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific, and Jamie Rivadeneira, founder and owner of pop culture-inspired boutique JapanLA, located in Los Angeles.

Hello Kitty Gary Baseman

This should be a fun exhibit featuring artifacts from Sanrio’s archives including a variety of plush spanning a 40 year timeline, Hello Kitty’s first telephone, stationery items, and many more vintage products from the 1970s and 1980s along with contemporary objects such as the one-of-a-kind Hello Kitty dress worn by Lady Gaga, a couture bustier worn by Katy Perry, diamond jewelry, and a Hello Kitty talking robot, allowing fans to connect to Hello Kitty’s history and view her evolution as a true cultural ambassador.
