Racer Runts at Cafe RacerWho: Racer Runts and Cafe Racer
What: Youth Music Show
Where: Cafe Racer at 5828 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle WA 98105
When: Saturday, Feb. 6th 4-7pm
Why: Kids get the opportunity to play their original music on stage

Seattle musician Jack David, 19, decided to approach the owner of Cafe Racer, Kurt Geissell and ask him if he’d be interested in a show put on by the under-21 crowd and Kurt jumped at the chance. “Can you imagine if we would have had that opportunity when we where their age? We never had a place to play music when I was growing up” said Kurt. He decided to turn the 1st Saturday of every month over to young drummer Jack David. Jack had been going to the cafe since he was 11 years old in 2008. Says Jack “I grew up watching bands and listening to music at Cafe Racer and always wanted to play on the Cafe Racer stage and now I am and I can also help other kids play music there too!”

This is a great place for kids to be introduced to music and everyone is welcome, young and old. Cafe Racer features the renowned “Official Bad Art Museum of Art” and great food, including the famous “Wonder Wiener” of hotdog fame.

Jack plays in the Nyamuziwa Marimba Band, he’s on the Redline, Seattle University’s drumline and he’s the drummer for the Seattle band “Deer Park”. You can hear their music here: https://deerparkmusic.bandcamp.com/album/quentin-in-my-vitamins

Nu Klezmer Army CD release party at Cafe Racer

Nu Klezmer Army

Nu Klezmer Army are a group of punks who play traditional Yiddish music and turn any setting into a celebration.

And they have a new CD! Come to the Nu Klezmer Army CD release party on Thursday January 30, 2014
9 pm @ Cafe Racer
5828 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105

Celebrate their new release “Funeral Afterparty” with
live music from Nu Klezmer Army and their friends Delta Halos
and How Things Work.

As an extra special bonus they will be premiering
their very first music video, shot and edited by Doug Arney.

image

Nu Klezmer Army brings new life and energy to the traditional music of the yiddish-speaking jews of Eastern Europe. Melding together each player’s diverse musical background, NKA brings forth an undeniably fun incarnation of instrumental, dance oriented, emotionally charged, klezmer music.

And they’re having a CD release party at Cafe Racer! Thursday, January 30th. Come in early and have dinner, music starts at 6pm

Equal parts wandering gypsy, pickled punk, cut-rate circus, and drunken rabbi, Nu Klezmer Army stays true to the traditions of learning from one another over bottles of shlivovitz and sharing stories of out travels. We have played everything from the seediest of punk rock dive bars, to ornate historic theaters, brass band and circus festivals (although we are neither a brass band or circus), rehab clinics, private parties, vegan dinners, city sponsored ground breaking ceremonies, (still no Bar Mitzvah), midnight in the mountains around a fire and we are up for just about anything.

Big Black’s Last Blast at Scarecrow Video

Big-Black-Movie-Poster-Low
In 1987, influential industrial rock band Big Black chose Seattle as the site of their last performance. The Georgetown show, with special guests Jesse Bernstein and Roland Barker, became legendary. On Monday, January 20th, Scarecrow Video will host two screenings of the resulting concert film, Big Black’s Last Blast.

It’s not only a document of this band’s final performance, but also a snapshot of Seattle’s music scene in the late ’80s. The three-camera concert video was directed by local artist Debra Geissel. (The on-stage camera was operated by her then-husband and current Cafe Racer proprietor Kurt Geissel.) The sound was engineered by John Nelson and mixed in Chicago by Steve Albini. Russ and Janet Battaglia of Fallout Records served as executive producers, and Monday’s screening will be presented by the film’s producers, Susie Purves and Larry Reid.

Scarecrow Video will host two screenings of Big Black’s Last Blast, at 7:00 and 8:30 PM. A small display of artifacts from the show will be featured, including the neck of Albini’s smashed guitar. The event is free, with a no-host bar, and is open to all 21 and over.

Bad Art Makes Good: Adventures in Kitsch and Beyond, Thursday Feb. 7th

BadArt_v02

Come to Ballard for “Pecha Kucha” a unique lecture series where speakers present 20 slides and speak about each illustration for 20 seconds. This month’s event s is at the Nordic Heritage Museum located at 3014 NW 67th Street and it’s 6pm-9pm on Thursday, February 7th, with an after-party at the Official Bad Art Museum of Art at Cafe Racer.

The Pecha Kucha theme is “Bad Art Makes Good – Adventures in Kitsch” in honor of the current show at the Nordic Heritage Museum, Bad Art? 1,000 Birch Board Pictures from Sweden. The more than 1,000 mixed-media works featured in this visiting exhibition from the Backlund & Håkansson Collection in Sweden represent a ubiquitous form of folk art from unknown origins in northern Europe. Sold as tourist souvenirs for more than a century, these humble objects have spread around the world.

Bad Art

Bad Art challenges notions of fine art, folk art, bad taste, and good taste by asking: what expressions of human creativity can be called art? Who decides, and does it matter? Are these birch board pictures art? Kitsch? Or something more?

Operadisiac

After Party at the Bad Art Museum at Cafe Racer

Pecha Kucha is scheduled 6pm to 9pm on Thursday February 7th and when that’s over the fun has just begun, as the party moves to Seattle’s own Official Bad Art Museum of Art (also known as OBAMA), located at Cafe Racer at 5828 Roosevelt Way NE in the Ravenna neighborhood near the UW. There will be food and drink and live music by the incomparable “Operadisiac” starting at 9pm.

Logo Large

Operadisiac bills itself as a surreal opera cabaret with flashes of burlesque. When opera was new it was a lively, scandalous thing performed in a noisy atmosphere of people gambling, eating, and socializing and they wanted to bring opera back to its roots by making it new again. Operadisiac, which is made up of 3 lovely ladies, Juliana Brandon, Marchette Dubois and Melissa Young, sing a variety of opera arias, art songs, and popular songs in operatic style interspersed with accordion solos and variety schtick. There are often burlesque numbers, but it’s not solely a burlesque show. As they say, think of them as opera outreach for adults.

If you haven’t been there, the Official Bad Art Museum of Art is full of the best examples of the worst type of kitschy art, including paint-by-numbers, black velvet paintings, paintings of kitties and children with big eyes, and the ubiquitous Dogs Playing Poker. It’s located at Cafe Racer at 5828 Roosevelt Way NE in the Ravenna neighborhood.
