"A Short-Term Solution to a Long-Term Problem"

A New Solo Play Written & Performed by David Schmader
Directed by Matthew Richter

Fridays and Saturdays, Jan. 20-Feb. 4, 8 p.m.

A comedy about unfunny things, “A Short-Term Solution to a Long-Term Problem,” commissioned by Richard Hugo House, is writer/performer David Schmader’s solo play about the dramatic life upheaval that drove him to spend a decade “living every day like it’s your last!”—a profoundly ridiculous adventure that finds Schmader aiming his pointy-headed, fall-off-your-seat wit at marriage, Mormons and the type of relaxation that comes from watching a baby get a spray tan.

GET YOUR TICKETS TODAY!

Tickets are $20/$15 for students and are available online, by calling (206) 322-7030 or at Hugo House during normal business hours.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the bar will be open prior to and following performances.

October 12th – Joey Arias and Eliot Douglass in “Strange Fruit”

Tuesday October 12, 7:30 PM The Triple Door

For those of you who are uninitiated to the magic that Joey Arias conjures up when he takes to the stage to sing the songs of Billie Holiday you are in for a treat and will be delighted by this sublime 90 minute sojourn of song and banter.  A dear friends mother (now in her 80’s) came to see the show last year sums it up best “ I never thought I would live to see Billie Holiday perform live!” or Christopher Frizelle of The Stranger “It will blow your fucking head open! ”, mind bending indeed.

For one night only, the legendary New York performance artist  Joey Arias and Eliot Douglass will appear at the Triple Door, performing original works alongside the material of Ms. Holiday–as only Joey Arias can conjure her. A two-time “Critic’s Choice” and “Pick of the Week” (Los Angeles Times), Seattle Gay News writer Sara Michelle Fetters said this of his last Triple Door performance:  “To say he left victorious would be something of an understatement… the only thing strange about this particular fruit is just how darn brilliant he really is.” -SGN, April 9 ’08

Seattle musicians Craig Flory – Saxophone, Geoff Harper -Bass and Denali Williams – Drums will be joining Joey and Eliot on stage Tuesday night.

“I felt like I was Huck Finn attending his own funeral or Jimmy Stewart in that movie where the angel walks him back through his life. I was braced for a lampooning, and I didn’t expect to be so touched” -Joni Mitchell

John Kelly brought down the house at The Triple Door in 2008 and we expect no less from him this year! Ever since John appeared as Joni Mitchell at the very first Wigstock in the Fabulous 80′s, he has cast a spell of illusion that has continued to captivate audiences, including the subject matter herself, Joni Mitchell the poet, painter and singer.

In this loving homage John Kelly the renowned two time Obie Award winning actor and extremely gifted performance artist inhabits the persona of Joni in a very intimate 90-minute journey through song and reflections on life. “And it ain’t no Drag”Steve Weicking

“People used to say nobody can sing my songs but me — they’re too personal,” Joni Mitchell explained recently in a rare interview with Matt Diehl for the LA Times. “Apparently, nobody told John Kelly not to try adapting her songs.”

Pre-Show Cocktails with Glimmer Cast

Lingo’s version of a V.I.P. backstage pass
April 22-May 15, Thurs-Sat, 6pm (pre-show)

A Glimmer of Hope or Skin or Light
Commissioned by ACT Theatre’s Central Heating Lab
Presented by ACT, Seattle Art Museum and Lingo

In 2006, KT began investigating the relationship between audience and artist with the primary goal of creating a more tangible intimacy between the two. This search has led her to seek out more potent environments that ask the performer and the witness to confront each other as unique individuals who bring to the exchange their personal histories and desires. A Glimmer of Hope or Skin or Light, in all its forms, is an outcropping of this search.

Sylvia O’Stayformore, a longtime drag hostess and fixture on Capitol hill, is taking the new light rail to explore the city. She has taken the lead pianist of her previous band, Pocket Hercules, and they are off to explore the world. First stop Orient Express. Join Sylvia and Tor Middlewood as they explore rare Bacharach, vaudeville standards, girl group songs and original compositions. It’s true intimate cabaret at it’s finest. The train cars are small so come early to get a good seat where all the action is. Dinner and Drinks are served all night.

Tor Middlewood has an abiding love for 60s Pop of all kinds, but Girl Group artists and French Pop in particular. Since he encountered reactions ranging from bewilderment to dismay when suggesting to the heterosexual musicians he’s worked with trying to work Girl Group songs into their repertoire, he thought he may as well give a drag queen performer a try. Good thing he did. He has found in Sylvia an alacrity and openness to so many kinds of music he loves, it has set the beehive, or should we say anthill, of his mind a-whirl with the possibilities.

Tor, who plays guitar as well as keyboards, has played Rock of all kinds with a plethora of musicians and can bring the RAWK with the best of them, but, feeling it’s not quite right for him to stuff a sock in his pants and perm his hair, and due to the fact that he doesn’t have a Marshall stack, has decided to turn his talent elsewhere…. for the time being. Certain songs he’s written which were turned down by other musical outfits he is in and has been in can now find an audience. He calls his pairing with Sylvia O “a little twisted, but overall, perfect. Now this is fun!”

Orient Express Restaurant and Lounge 2963 4th Ave. S. (SODO) Seattle WA. Show runs every Thursday night (January and February) from 8:00pm-10:00pm No Cover

Trolloween is the Birthday celebration for Seattle’s famous Fremont Troll.

October 31st is the Trolls 20th Birthday!

October 31st is the Trolls 20th Birthday!

It is held on his Birthday October 31st at 7pm sharp.
The celebration  starts with the Troll under the Aurora Bridge (Troll Ave & N 36th St), as he loves a good laugh and a great story.   Then revelers will be off for the annual Haunt of Fremont (a procession of costumed dancers & performers (& you) taking over the streets of Fremont.)

This 20th anniversary of the birth of the Fremont Troll, you’ll be experiencing the tale of  Dante’s Inferno. Many seasoned artists and performers will present their twisted and whacky version of this dark tale, known to us as: ‘Just a little lover’s spat ~ honey’.

Rain or dry, revelers will sing, dance, marvel, and laugh their way through the dark underbelly of Dante and Fremont.   This is an unsweetened and piquant family event with plenty of fun to scare the laughs out of any stoic kid or stogy adult.

Vamola

Vamola

Come dressed as your favorite dead celebrity and take part in our costume walk across the final stage, under the Fremont Bridge, for the appreciation of your community.

If you can lend a hand to help pull off this fabulous piece of street theater, meet by the Troll at 6:30pm & check in with the volunteer coordinator to get a job.

For those with a predilection for things dark and heathen, it’s well worth a trip down to Portland for the Conflux Dark Arts Festival this Friday and Saturday. Last year’s event was very strong and varied in musical and visual performances and deserved even a larger audience than it had. This year’s event features steampunk favorites Abney Park and Seattle goth veterans Legion Within among many other performances.

For information and tickets see the Conflux MySpace page.
