Aurélia’s Oratorio

France

Special Pre-Festival Event May 7-11

In the twisted tradition of Shockheaded Peter, Tim Burton and Edward Gorey, Seattle International Children’s Festival, in partnership with Seattle Repertory Theatre, presents Aurélia’s Oratorio.  A dazzling display of stage illusion and circus theater spectacle.

Aurélia’s Oratorio is inspired by European circuses and medieval drawings depicting upside-down and inside-out worlds with altered states. Nothing is as it seems as the impossible happens. Furniture has a mind of its own, trains go through people and, at times, the puppets are in charge.

Creator and performer Aurélia Thierrée has performed as actress and illusionist since early childhood, initially with her parents Victoria Thierrée Chaplin and Jean-Baptiste Thierrée, the pioneers of new circus in the famous Cirque Invisible (Seattle Rep, 1997) and Cirque Imaginaire, and more recently with Tiger Lillies Circus of Shockheaded Peter fame.

“Grab the kids — not too young — and treat yourself to 70 minutes of the most fun you’ll have in a theater this year.” –Post and Courier, Charleston

“It is an absolute spellbinder”
Daily Telegraph

“It is a bewitching 70 minutes in which the nightmarish and the dreamy meet and disintegrate in a puff of smoke and the whistle of a train.”

Miles and Karina

Northwest Film Forum previewed The Adventures of Prince Achmed several months ago and commissioned musical duo Miles & Karina to write an original score for the film.  Though performed only a few times at NWFF,  anyone who attended this incredible event can attest to the magic that resulted from this collaboration.

Join Miles and Karina in a redux at the Vashon Theater on Sunday, April 20th.  A very special film, 80 years old, yet as fresh as today with a new soundtrack to match.  The film was made in  1926 by Lotte Reiniger.  It is the oldest surviving feature-length animated cartoon and features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera.

I was at the inaugural performance and can attest to the utter fabulousness of this program.  Be there!

debut at Re Bar, and as expected he has been dazzling the world with his beautiful voice.  From Carnegie Hall to the Edinburg Fringe Festival he is able to name and venue drop with the best of them. The Las Vegas Journal awarded Joey “Diva of the Strip” over Celine Dion. He has sung with David Bowie, collaborated with the late Klaus Nomi. Oh! and I forgot Andy Warhol, but let’s just leave it at that. Joey Arias is synonymous with and the definition of cutting edge, he reigned as Grande Dame Diva when there still was an underground scene and has gone on to woo the mainstream. Eliot Douglass is currently performing in

as a pianist in the Cirque du Soleil’s hit Zumanity. As an original member, he has also composed and arranged material for the show. Eliot and Joey have worked together for more than a dozen years with concert dates on three continents and until recently together in Zumanity.

"Bridge Motel" by Sally Banfill
The Bridge Motel by Sally Banfill

The Bridge Motel (3650 Bridge Way N, off Aurora, in Fremont) will host a one-night only event to kick off the MOTEL series on 15 September 2007, 5 PM - midnight. Built in 1952 by a retired policeman, the motel has anchored the north end of the infamous Aurora Bridge for decades in welcoming glory. Originally a place frequented by tourists and traveling salesmen, the Bridge Motel has over time become more a place for those living from paycheck to paycheck, and whose lives involve drug use, prostitution, and the like.

The Bridge Motel

In the popular imagination, the place embodies and realizes that underbelly, shady side of life’s toiling. There has been murders here, and numerous drug busts, its decaying artifice contains the stories of a full lifetime of drama, and the day by day passing through of souls … For one night, its last night of existence, the Bridge Motel will be dressed up and called to shine and dance … Numerous installation/performance artists have been given full rein the week prior, to transform each dilapidated pocket into whatever they could imagine. The opening evening will reveal the Bridge’s final blossom before its inevitable razing. And to top it off, every inch of the motel will be crawling with performance artists, injecting the animation and energy of truly ephemeral art. The stellar roster of artists involved is sure to create a cacophony of sights and sounds to inspire the mind and heart, and give the aging motel a proper dress-up before it’s demise … This night is not to be missed.

The Bridge Motel 1

Jed Dunkerley, Jason Puccinelli and Greg Lundgren will be holding down room #10 on the second floor, with a performance piece entitled “Deep Space.” Other performers are Vis-a-vis Society, One Pot and Dike Din.
