Many wood joinery techniques either depend upon or compensate for the fact that wood is anisotropic: its material properties are different along different dimensions. Matthew Richter lives this reality, every day in his studio where he makes all of his furniture by hand. He uses traditional joinery – not nails and screws – to make his pieces strong and long-lasting, and they show an imaginative approach to an age-old technique.
Those of you with a wood fixation (or as the French say “amoureux du bois”) will enjoy being able to caress the sleek lines and rub your hands along the finely honed wooden tables, cabinets and shelves.
Visit Matthew in his studio “XOM Fine Woodworking” at 610 2nd Avenue, near Pioneer Square in Seattle, all day today, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm or by appointment by calling 206-240-5001.
XOM Fine Woodworking has a number of unusual holiday gifts, ranging from children’s blocks to incredible room-filling tables made of giant fallen old growth timber. As tracheophytes, trees have lignified tissues which transport resources such as water, minerals and photosynthetic products up and down the plant. While lumber from a harvested tree is no longer alive, these tissue still absorb and expel water and other liquids. In a microcosm of the natural world, Matt creates an incredible table top display, as useful as it is beautiful, of this natural forest phenomenon. A simple wine carafe, lovingly coupled with a slab of wood, with a hollowed out receptical for embracing the liquids of choice in the perfect synergy of science and art, a laboratory beaker. Perfect for this holiday season!
