Bumbershoot turns 41!

The Labor Day weekend, harbenger of the end of summer, brings North America’s largest urban arts festival, Bumbershoot to Seattle.

Now in the 41st year,  Bumbershoot is world renowned for showcasing musical talent.  And while there are a myriad of music choices, Bumbershoot by it’s very name is an umbrella of the arts (from the slang: bum•ber•shoot —n. informal An umbrella.)

So be sure not to miss:

The Magic Show at the Center Pavilion everyday from 11am-8pm, a multimedia exhibit that explores illusion, conjuring, levitation, and transformation.

Get your guns up with 2010 Stranger Genius Award winner Marya Sea Kaminski’s Bonnie and the Robberi, a collection of rock covers, original songs, and monologues that explore societal themes of women with firearms, love, and violence and is backed by the musical talents of Landlords Daughter.

Bumber by Number a fully interactive color by number show featuring some of Seattle’s favorite visual art talents and is curated by the beloved Marlow Harris & Jo David.  Pick up a veggie and join in the communal art creation.

Movies at SIFF Cinema and McCaw Hall feature projects: Films4Families, 48 Hour Film Project, Nerds Unite, and Animation for Adults, just to name a few.

Just in case you spend all your Bumbershoot days watching movies, seeing visual art shows, eating and shopping the vendor booths.  You can still catch a fabulous line up of musicians at Bumbershoot After Dark, a collaboration with Decibel, One Reel,  Seattle Center, & Kaos Theory.  This late night (10pm-4am) celebration at Exhibition Hall, features some of the most acclaimed electronic music performers and deejays.  Saturday brings the musical stylings of Craze, Claude Van Stroke, Jokers of the Scene, and The Dowlz. Sunday’s line-up is Z-Trip, Four Tet, and Dam Funk. Bumbershoot After Dark is boasting this collaboration “to be the most adventurous stage configuration that any of the organizations have ever produced throughout their 100+ years of collective experience.”

Be warned if you go to Bumbershoot expecting to get a glimpse of John Oates fabulous mustache, you will be disappointed.  It has only been seen once in the last 25 years: last year’s National Moustache Convention where he was a special guest.

For a breakdown of all the Bumbershoot events & happenings check the official SCHEDULE. Hall & Oates take the Bumbershoot main stage on Monday.

Bag Painter and Co. ~ Chris Crites and Travis Lampe Friday June 12th at the Roq La Rue

Roq la Rue
presents

Chris Crites
“About:Face”
new paintings

and

Travis Lampe
“Best Loved Tales of Misery and Woe”
new paintings

opens Friday
June 12th 6-9pm
with music by
DJ Vodka Twist

Roq La Rue Gallery
2312 2nd Ave
Seattle 98121

Roq La Rue is pleased to host Chris Crites second show at the gallery, a new series of paintings entitled “About:Face”.
Working with acrylic on paper (including his trademark paper bags), Crites’ hyper meticulous works explores the communicative plane we humans share that speaks to us on so many levels that language cannot. This body of work is a continuation of Crites exploration of faces from different stages in time. Part of what fascinates Crites is the unseen story, or history behind each image, and depict very poignant moments in the subjects lifetime, captured in a still image. He says “By working in a larger scale and with different materials, this series represents a challenge to myself and what I believe to be some of my most engaging paintings.”

Travis Lampe makes his debut at the gallery with a show entitled “Best Loved Tales of Misery and Woe”.
Working in his humorous trademark retro animation inspired style, this exhibition “Is about a creeping stain of woe that is so permeating that it’s gone back in time and spoiled all of your childhood memories – but in a funny way.” says Lampe.

More info coming soon.

Speakeasy Tuesdays at Rosebud (and 1st Anniversary Party 5/12)

Greetings all you vamps, tramps, flappers and philosophers! For the past year,
the Speakeasy has been bringing you back in time to an era of vision and vice,
prohibition and progress, crime and creativity. And for the past year many of
you have come to drink in the history, cool down your heels, and kick them up on
occasion.

And even as history repeats itself, the ingenuity of the American spirit in
having a good time and laughing in the face of economic turmoil remains intact.
Owing to that, each and every week the Speakeasy still comes on strong, and now
has made it to its first birthday!

So come on by to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the only night in the
West Coast that features 1920-30’s jazz/blues/rags/dancebands!
And if you’ve
been meaning to go and haven’t made it yet, well, you’ve missed over 50 chances,
but don’t worry, we’re a forgiving bunch! We’ll make it worth your while with
drink specials and some special giveaways, so drape some dapper threads and tip
along the stroll to the Rosebud!

Wayfarers of the Gypsy Mansion a musical bazaar of sorts

Wayfarers

“These are the times, my friends. And these are the days. Where the world becomes malleable, palpable. When novelty and genius are within our reach. We are cautioned against being passionate about these things by tales of progress turned to greed and of technology turning on us. And yet, the golden light is just right, the clocks are synchronizing, the stars are in alignment.

This is what we celebrate tonight. We celebrate these transient times, with these transient artists.” – c. lantz

Roq La Rue presents Stella Hultberg & Andrew Hem new paintings

Opens Friday Feb 13th 2009 6-9pm
• artists in attendance •
Roq la Rue is pleased to present two solo shows for the month of February. Both artists deal with feeling isolated whether alone or in a broader cultural sense. Andrew Hem’s paintings depict young, waif like women who seem to cull an inner strength from within themselves. They are surrounded by imaginary creatures, both animals as well as more mythological type spirits that seem to dwell in the cathedral settings over shadowing the main subjects. Stella Hultberg’s art nouveau inspired sylphs are more more fluid and melancholy in this show. This show is based on Stella’s exploration of the fragility of human emotions, and the point where emotions can either break or become stronger.
We hope you will join us for a reception with the artists ths Friday, Feb 13th from 6-9pm. Please contact us with any questions or to request an online preview of the shows.
And of course everything is better with dj vodka twist !
