7 sets of music to be played by DJ’s: Greg Vandy, Miss Lilli, Nipper, Cruddy, Self-Administered Beatdown, Chilly and Johnny Horn, with a live music by The Basements.

Roq La Rue is pleased to host Chris Crites second show at the gallery, a new series of paintings entitled “About:Face”.
Working with acrylic on paper (including his trademark paper bags), Crites’ hyper meticulous works explores the communicative plane we humans share that speaks to us on so many levels that language cannot. This body of work is a continuation of Crites exploration of faces from different stages in time. Part of what fascinates Crites is the unseen story, or history behind each image, and depict very poignant moments in the subjects lifetime, captured in a still image. He says “By working in a larger scale and with different materials, this series represents a challenge to myself and what I believe to be some of my most engaging paintings.”

Travis Lampe makes his debut at the gallery with a show entitled “Best Loved Tales of Misery and Woe”.
Working in his humorous trademark retro animation inspired style, this exhibition “Is about a creeping stain of woe that is so permeating that it’s gone back in time and spoiled all of your childhood memories – but in a funny way.” says Lampe.

the Speakeasy has been bringing you back in time to an era of vision and vice,
prohibition and progress, crime and creativity. And for the past year many of
you have come to drink in the history, cool down your heels, and kick them up on
occasion.

And even as history repeats itself, the ingenuity of the American spirit in
having a good time and laughing in the face of economic turmoil remains intact.
Owing to that, each and every week the Speakeasy still comes on strong, and now
has made it to its first birthday!

So come on by to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the only night in the
West Coast that features 1920-30′s jazz/blues/rags/dancebands! And if you’ve
been meaning to go and haven’t made it yet, well, you’ve missed over 50 chances,
but don’t worry, we’re a forgiving bunch! We’ll make it worth your while with

•  Roq la Rue is pleased to present two solo shows for the month of February. Both artists deal with feeling isolated whether alone or in a broader cultural sense. Andrew Hem’s paintings depict young, waif like women who seem to cull an inner strength from within themselves. They are surrounded by imaginary creatures, both animals as well as more mythological type spirits that seem to dwell in the cathedral settings over shadowing the main subjects. Stella Hultberg’s art nouveau inspired sylphs are more more fluid and melancholy in this show. This show is based on Stella’s exploration of the fragility of human emotions, and the point where emotions can either break or become stronger.
