Party in the Train Cars

excerpt from the Moonspinners MySpace page

2/13/2010 9:00 PM at ORIENT EXPRESS w/ LES ESTRANGERS party in the train cars!
2963 4th Avenue South, SEATTLE,
Cost: $5
Hi Gang We MoonSpinners have an especially fun show coming up on Feb. 13th, not only the eve of Valentine’s day but also the start of Chinese New Year (The Year of the Tiger for those of you scoring at home). So what better venue than The Orient Express restaurant and bar in SODO (the train cars on fourth avenue once known as the beloved Andy’s Diner)? And just to make it more cross-cultural, on the slate with us are Les Étrangers – a Portland-based group that specializes in 60’s French garage-pop classics, plus the soulful stylings of DJ Miss Lilli’s scratchy 45’s. The kitchen stays open late, the drinks will be bold and the beer will be cold – come for fun & great music!

Love My Wave Fridays

One of my Favorite ongoing dance nights in Seattle is DJ Miss B Wonder Jones’ “Love My Wave”. It’s been around in one form or another for years, featuring 80’s punk, ska and other various forms of modern music. This version (my favorite so far) is purely New Wave. It happens Fridays in Belltown at the Buddha Bar 2222 2nd Ave (Between Bell and Blanchard) next to Shorty’s. If you’re hungry arrive before ten for delicious Thai food- enjoy happy hour drinks from 10-12 then enjoy a party on the dance floor, my loves. I usually hit this after Roq La Rue openings because it’s only a block away and deep down I’m a child of the 80’s. ~ DJ Vodka Twist

Cocktails with Sylvia, Tor, Burt & friends.

Sylvia O’Stayformore, a longtime drag hostess and fixture on Capitol hill, is taking the new light rail to explore the city. She has taken the lead pianist of her previous band, Pocket Hercules, and they are off to explore the world. First stop Orient Express. Join Sylvia and Tor Middlewood as they explore rare Bacharach, vaudeville standards, girl group songs and original compositions. It’s true intimate cabaret at it’s finest. The train cars are small so come early to get a good seat where all the action is. Dinner and Drinks are served all night.

Tor Middlewood has an abiding love for 60s Pop of all kinds, but Girl Group artists and French Pop in particular. Since he encountered reactions ranging from bewilderment to dismay when suggesting to the heterosexual musicians he’s worked with trying to work Girl Group songs into their repertoire, he thought he may as well give a drag queen performer a try. Good thing he did. He has found in Sylvia an alacrity and openness to so many kinds of music he loves, it has set the beehive, or should we say anthill, of his mind a-whirl with the possibilities.

Tor, who plays guitar as well as keyboards, has played Rock of all kinds with a plethora of musicians and can bring the RAWK with the best of them, but, feeling it’s not quite right for him to stuff a sock in his pants and perm his hair, and due to the fact that he doesn’t have a Marshall stack, has decided to turn his talent elsewhere…. for the time being. Certain songs he’s written which were turned down by other musical outfits he is in and has been in can now find an audience. He calls his pairing with Sylvia O “a little twisted, but overall, perfect. Now this is fun!”

From The Stranger

Hyped as “Seattle’s only go-go bar,” Georgetown’s Tiger Lounge is awash in ’70s psychedelia: lava lamps, beaded curtains, a tricked-out disco-dance floor. There’s also a full bar and food menu, ranging from happy-hour appetizers to pub-grub standards to gourmet pizza and dessert. Added bonuses: outdoor seating (with a fire pit!) and live entertainment—from stand-up to jazz—five nights a week.

Jim Blanchard at the Roq La Rue Friday 09.11.09

We will be opening a new show on Friday, September 11th by artist and painter Jim Blanchard with an opening party from 6pm-9pm and theme music by DJ Vodka Twist.

Jim is probably one of artists we have shown the longest, in fact he was in Roq La Rue’s very first exhibition in 1998! We are pleased to welcome him back again for his solo show, “Personality Parade”, featuring his trademark dynamic portraits of off kilter pop icons and on-point idols of true hipness and bad assery. These paintings are so tightly rendered that they look like silkscreen images but are in fact painted by hand.
Fans of underground comics may know Jim for his stint as an inker on Pete Bagge’s legendary “Hate” comics and his work as art director at Fantagraphics. (some text taken from the roqlarue website)

Roq La Rue is pleased to present two solo shows by two artists for July/August 2009.

Italian artist Nicoletta Ceccoli returns to the gallery with a new series of work entitled “Beauties and Beasts”, exploring themes of childhood innocence and the loss of that innocence, as well as exploring the idea of isolation caused by a creative life.
Her darkly luminous work, while initially seemingly whimsical, contains a deeper edge of melancholy that anchors each piece. Her technique, incorporating pencils and acrylics to create a softly washed pastel world, enhance their dream like imagery and soft surrealistic nature.
In 2001, Nicoletta was awarded with the Andersen prize as best Italian illustrator of the year, and has illustrated numerous children’s books.
She is also a four time recipient of the ‘award of excellence’ from Communication Arts. In 2006 she received the silver medal from Society of Illustrators (New York).

Eric Fortune has a mini-solo show entitled “Daughters of Our Nature.” Four paintings depict female subjects as emotionally resonant metaphors. Eric uses washed hues and natural tones that create, on one level, a feeling of serenity — one that contrasts with the often dynamic nature of his imagery. In an equally compelling contrast, his subtle colors and flowing lines are brought to life through the perfection of his rendering. Eric’s soft but riveting lighting effects are produced with a technique called “glazing”: Eric paints a very light coat of acrylic on the paper — lets it dry — paints over it with another very thin layer — lets it dry — over and over and over again. This technique requires an incredible level of patience, focus and care, for each painting takes about 150 hours to produce.

Fortune received his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design where he was honored with the Outstanding Senior Award upon graduation. His work continued to garner acclaim with the acceptance into such annual competitions as The Society of Illustrators NY and LA, as well as Spectrum and others. He was the Artist Guest of Honor for ConGlomeration, and was recently awarded the Jack Gaughan Award for Best Emerging Artist of 2009
