When not working as an Emmy-winning writer for animated series like Camp Lazlo, Phineas and Ferb, SpongeBob Squarepants, the cartoonist Kaz has been drawing his weekly Underworld comic strip since 1992, including a long run in Seattle’s alternative weekly The Stranger. Come celebrate the first comprehensive collection of his clever creation on February 13 with a book signing and art exhibition at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery. Underworld: From Hoboken to Hollywood collects the most memorable strips from the 23-year lifetime of the strip, together with photos, anecdotes, and related Underworld ephemera. The strip chronicles a degenerate society populated by parodies of vaguely familiar pop culture characters.
Meet this exceptional artist on his first visit to Seattle on Saturday, February 13 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. This event coincides with the Valentines edition of the Georgetown Art Attack, celebrating 8 years of compelling visual and performing arts presentations throughout the romantic industrial arts corridor. An interesting sideshow at the Kaz event will be local artist Ellen Forney revealing her Kaz-designed full back tattoo for the first time. Forney was a featured artist at the very first Art Attack in February, 2008. Her profile has increased dramatically in the intervening 8 years.
