Art Not Terminal Gallery
Seattle, Washington
Opening March 3rd-April 1st
6-10pm
Bherd Studios Gallery presents “Pretty, Sexy, Dirty Girly”, a multimedia exhibition of all female artists addressing the topic of feminine sexuality, curated by Seattle artist, Siolo Thompson. The exhibit opens on Friday, February 10th and includes everything from pin up photographs and figurative paintings and illustrations to pieces that will challenge the viewer to look beyond the surface of the work and examine their reactions and interactions with the work and the artists. For example, Maggie Schneider, one of the artists will perform “pants. dance. revolution,” where she will dance in her underwear inside the gallery while listening to music that only she can hear. Her performance will thrust the audience into a voyeuristic role asking the viewer to examine how they feel about this type of public expression.
Another featured artist, Andie deRoux, who has worked as a model and been photographed by a wide array of fashion and fetish photographers, is also a transsexual female. Andie brings an important and individual perspective to the exhibit through the opportunity to understand her unique version of feminine sexuality. In addition, burlesque performers Lyla la Coeur and Cherry Manhattan will perform during the exhibits artist opening. Burlesque and its recent explosion in popularity represent a powerful antithesis to the ‘ideal’ version of female sexuality that society typically promotes.
“Buy Dirty Art for a Clean Cause”
Attendee’s will have two chances to support a “clean cause”. The gallery will be holding a raffle AND will be a collection station for bringing new socks, laundry soap, toothbrushes and other hygiene items to support the Urban Rest Stop. The Urban Rest Stop in Seattle is a charity that provides a clean, safe and welcoming facility where individuals and families in need can come and use restrooms, shower and laundry facilities. They are an important service that has benefited thousands of homeless and needy folks over the years and these services have been provided at no cost to patrons.
“Pretty, Sexy, Dirty Girly” opens on Friday, February 10th with an artist reception from 6pm – 10pm. The exhibit will continue through Friday, March 2nd and can be viewed during regular gallery hours Wednesday – Friday from noon -6pm. All participating artists include: Andie deRoux, Crystal Barbre, Jackie Kingsbury, Niffer Calderwood, Cat Davis, Maggie Schneider, Debora Spencer, Jenn Brisson, Sadie Beaudett, Jenny Dayton and burlesque performances by Lyla la Coeur and Cherry Manhattan.

“SCERD” A first art show by Lelah Maupin.
Opens Thurs, Jan, 12th 5-8:30pm
Ghost Gallery, Corner of E Denny Way & Summit/Olive
Curated by Laurie Kearney & C. M. Ruiz
Lelah is a local artist & musician who has long occupied Seattle’s young creative community. She is the drummer in a band called TacocaT, but has always mixed in her artistic endeavors when and where she could- doing posters, record cover art, and tour diaries. Recently, she blossomed on a project doing a banner for her band where she used her knowledge of typography, color theory, and composition to create an instantly recognizable visual identity. After carting it around the United States on tour a few times and doing another banner for a private commission, Maupin has returned to Seattle to open a show of banners expressing far more personal thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Each banner as a piece will be seen as small fragments of her humor and personality but taken as a whole all of the pieces will reflect a enormous self portrait of Maupin’s brain. The beauty of the show overall will be that doing such visual typography pieces, Maupin strips any misinterpretation; every one of the pieces speaking volumes with a few simple words.

APEX: Robert Hanson
January 7-April 29, 2012
The delicacy of Robert Hanson’s sparsely rendered studies of seated female models belies their innate power. Tiny by contemporary standards, the drawings, usually less than 12 inches tall, are composed of carefully made lines and small marks that provide just enough critical information to make the figures seem perfectly complete. The drawings communicate a sense of humanity that seems simultaneously contemporary and timeless.

Photographer, David Wentworth, takes you beyond the velvet ropes and rows of celebrities into a realm modern mythology.
While on assignment for the Village Voice in New York City covering 2011 Fashion Week, Wentworth, foregoing requisite shots of Anna Wintour and Lindsey Lohan, was much more intrigued by the stories behind the scenes than on the runway.
Beyond our image conscious brain, is a need for connection. In these luminescent pieces that need is realized as he documents moments of tenderness, trust, jealousy, joy, and ambition in a world known mostly for its shallowness. Each photograph is a story, full of depth.
His photographs neither glamorize nor exploit, but elevate feminine mystique. He finds moments of peace in backstage chaos, as well times of turmoil and humor. One model screams out in agony as several smiling hairstylists go to town on her locks. Another captures a moment between model and make up artist that is so tender, so pure that it makes you want to call your best friend.
These images are not only fascinating and beautiful, they are technically masterful. Wentworth composes with light, creatively capitalizing on all available sources, be it the latest flash-gun quickly deployed from his belt, a piece of cardboard covered in tin-foil, or the erie hue of a spotty fluorescent bulb. In one photo, light pours through a halo of hairspray as two hair stylists attack a hair-do from opposing sides. Every piece teeters on the edge of chaos and symmetry. His camera finds deep perspective and always, perfectly defined intention. The photographs may be spontaneous, but he has seen it coming.

Vermillion Gallery’s newest show is ‘LA HUMANO CONDICION’.
kelly Lyles ‘THE 12 STEPS’ series (oil paintings about addiction, illustrating the pain, the pathos, & hopefully some levity on all-too familiar scenarios of drunks and junkies) are hung, in a fun pairing with a bunch of fantastic ‘Retablos’ by the Vilchis brothers from Mexico. They depict (on small metal plates) people’s recovery from near tragic stories (a dog bite, diseases, farm accidents, etc), honouring a 500 year old tradition of religious votive paintings. It runs from October 13th-November 2nd, the opening is this thurs, October 13th, 6-9 pm in conjunction with the Capitol Hill Art Walk.
1508 11th Ave (across from Value Village in the ‘Pike/Pine corridor’), open daily 4pm til midnight (later on weekends)
Join us at Ghost Gallery for an exciting exhibit featuring Julie Luke’s latest series of mixed media paintings ~ Her art is intensely personal, spiritual and graphic in nature. Open Circle Theater presents Ajax by Sophocles
Ten years of a bloody war in the desert of Troy have finally taken their toll. Ajax, one of the greatest soldiers in the Greek coalition, is driven mad by the death of his cousin, Achilles, and the humiliation of losing Achilles’ prized armor to Odysseus. Unhinged, he seeks revenge in a most brutal and horrifying way, putting his entire military career – and his very life – on the line. Will the love of his family be enough to save Ajax from self-destruction or will the war claim another casualty? This new adaption takes a modern look at Sophocles’ classic story of the physical – and mental – devastation of war.
