Presence: Amuar\'s Breath

The Henry presents the University of Washington’s School of Art, Master of Fine Arts annual exhibition in the North Galleries. Throughout their graduate program, students have worked with faculty advisers and other artists to expand concepts, develop advanced techniques, discuss critical issues, and emerge with a vision and direction for their own work. Pieces in the exhibition are selected by the students and their thesis committees, with curatorial assistance from Jim Rittimann, Henry Art Gallery head preparator and exhibition designer.

Molly Epstein

One of the featured artists is Molly Epstein, who has been studying metallurgic arts and has created an interactive sculpture called Heartbeat Device 1.  It is made of stainless steel, silicone and a heartbeat sensor, with electronics by Greg Reeves and programming by Taso Lyristis.  Another piece (first picture above) is reminiscent of a seashell, blowing a soft and scented breeze from its mysterious orifice. During her time at the UW, Molly worked with engineers and doctors to collaborate and narrow the field between art and medicine.  One of the devices she helped design with Dr. Richard Hopper was the Seattle Alar Molding Device (Patent Pending) a nasal molding device which helped children born with cleft palate deformity.

The opening is Friday night, May 23rd, 7pm until 9pm, and one can see the work through June 15th.
